The Hero Gaol Part 1: The Match

The sound of the crowing rooster woke Gaol up from is sleep. He went to check the date and saw it was May 1, the day that 16 years ago, Marche slew the evil dragon Tiamat and brought peace to the Kingdom of Calm. Today was a day of happiness and celebration for everybody but Gaol could not help but feel sadden because it was on this day 16 years ago that his father died defeating Tiamat and ultimately became a legend. Gaol had been told that his father, Marche, was one of the bravest and noblest Knights there ever was. These stories of his father were all Gaol knew about him because Gaol's mother was still pregnant with him at the time. The stories were not sufficient though. Gaol wanted to know more about his father and to do this he would need to become a Knight.

It was just like any other day. Wake up in the morning and help his mother do chores around the house. When Gaol eventually got done with his chores, he went to play with his friend who was 2 years older named Ash. They would practice their swordsmanship with wooden sticks as both aspired to become Knights. Today, May 1, Gaol and Ash set a bet, who ever could disarm the other first would be declared the winner and not have to do chores for a week because the loser would do them for him. Ash was truly the better swordsman and had an advantage over Gaol because being as skinny as Gaol was, he barely had the strength to strike heavy blows. The match was set to begin. In an open town square where there was not much activity so as not to disturb the public. They first crossed swords as a sign of respect for the other then they broke apart to ready themselves for combat. Gaol knew he had little chance to disarm Ash head on so he would have to use his superior agility to help him. They circled one another until Ash made the first move with a downward slash at Gaol. Gaol quickly moved his sword in place to stop the blow but was surprised at how much strength was placed behind it that it threw him off balance. Ash saw this and went in to deliver the disarming strike but Gaol suddenly fell to the side and rolled out of the way. Gaol had luckily escaped an extra week of chores for now but he wondered how long he could last. He knew he had to end it fast so he rushed in trying to deliver quick strikes to the body. Ash was taken by surprise as he did not expect Gaol to use a head on tactic. He none the less blocked all of Gaol's strikes but that was exactly what Gaol had wanted because they weakened Ash's grip on the wooden stick. Seeing his opportunity, with one final swiping motion Gaol used all his strength and knocked the wooden stick out of Ash's hand.
